Aurora Skarra-Gallagher was a software engineer for 15 years, having earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science. She worked at Yahoo! for over six years. After quitting her job at Yahoo!, she played professional beach volleyball for a few years while doing software consulting on the side.
About her days as a firefighter, Aurora says, “Every day is unique. Firefighting is not always that life and death struggle to save someone in a smoky room. There are so many other things that we do, from using sophisticated firefighting and rescue equipment to promoting fire safety, from inspecting and enforcing safety standards to demonstrating the use of firefighting equipment, performing practice drills, and working with police and ambulance service personnel.”
To keep her body in peak physical condition, Aurora hikes up and down a set of 75 steps while wearing a 40-pound vest several times a week. “I feel more springy once I’ve done my weight training,” she says. “There will never be a time in my career where it won’t be important for me to be physically fit. So if I ever let that go by the wayside, I’m doing a disservice to the people I’m working for.”
