Bernice is a visionary and pioneer for gender equality in education. She is widely known as the “Godmother of Title IX”, a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity.
Dr. Sandler has spent over fifty years advocating for women’s rights. She began fighting for the rights of women in education after she personally experienced sex discrimination when she was told she came on “too strong for a woman” to be hired in academia.
Bernice is a Senior Scholar at the Women’s Research and Education Institute in Washington, DC, where she consults with institutions and others about achieving equity for women and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine.
She was the first person appointed to a Congressional committee staff to work specifically on women’s issues and the first person to testify before a Congressional committee about discrimination against women in education.
Bernice holds a degree in counseling and has taught counseling, and worked as a psychologist, a research assistant, a nursery school teacher, a guitar instructor, and like many women, a secretary.
