Dr. Melissa Freeman has been a doctor for more than 60 years. At 92 she’s run her private practice for 40 years and treats people who are addicted to opioid drugs like heroin and oxycodone at a New York City clinic.
Dr. Freeman, granddaughter of a slave, was pushed to excel in academics by her grandfather and her father. She attended Music and Art High School then a family friend suggested that she become a physician. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a musician. I took physiology in college and I liked science.” Working days and going to college at night led her down the path to Howard University’s College of Medicine (where she graduated in 1955). She eventually went to work for Beth Israel Medical Center where she’s been for over 50 years. “I still love music. I still go to operas and philharmonics, but I knew I wasn’t gonna be a musician.”
Her secret to longevity, “You do what you have to do. You have to move on. As long as God gives you life and gives me strength, I’ll have to keep doing it, and he has been very, very merciful for me.”
