Christina Hopper is the first African American female to fly a fighter jet during combat in a major war. When asked how that came about she said, “So I prayed about it, and then I had this very vivid dream. I felt like God was telling me that I should not only go apply, but that I would fly fighters. I didn’t have any flying background or aviation experience, but as I went through training, the doors started opening. There were a lot of people who helped me along the way to get ready, so I did well enough in my class to get F-16s and that was how I got my start.”
Christina is the Founder of Supergirls, a group that mentors young pilots, fosters camaraderie, and addresses issues unique to women in aviation. She said it is good for the female students to feel support from the women around them, especially in a career field that is male dominated. And that is what she wanted Supergirls to be. “I named our group Supergirls because as female aviators, we face many unique challenges as we balance the high demands of competing in our careers with effectively managing our home lives. It’s not an easy balance to achieve, but the female pilots I have met make it look easy,”
