Eileen Kramer is an Australian dancer and choreographer. Born in November 1914, she is still active as of December 2017. Eileen has had a passion for dance since she was 24 and it is something she has never given up. In 2008 she published Walkabout Dancer, an account of her life.
In 2017 she created dance-drama A Buddha’s Wife, inspired by her travels in India. It forms part of a wider work celebrating her life, supported by the Arts Health Institute. Identifying Eileen as a national treasure the national Arts Health Institute has made her its ambassador, and financially supported her to live and make more work.
Recently Eileen watched back a video of one of her performances and she couldn’t help but think how lucky she is to be given the opportunity to perform. “My favourite part is that you’re making order of life, you choose a subject, you choreograph it and make order of it whereas in life it may be complicated or upsetting so you go on stage and make order of it,” she explained.
Eileen says the best years of her life had been since she turned 100. “You do have to prepare for age, and I’ve prepared by always doing creative work and doing my best to ignore everything else. I still like to see myself looking well and good, made up, dressed nicely and doing something … I still like to wear lipstick ….I still have emotions, I still become deeply moved by something.”
