Darcia Grayber is a firefighter, paramedic, and a political candidate for Oregon State Representative. She tells us, “As a firefighter, I have spent my life serving my community, one call at a time, working hard to make things better for people on the worst day of their lives. My job has given me an incredible privilege in being called to people’s most desperate and vulnerable moments, and the beauty of making things better, or at the very least, being a presence to provide calm, comfort, and leadership if needed.
I was 10 years old when I decided I wanted to be a firefighter. It wasn’t a common career path for women back then, and to say that I experienced barriers along my way is an understatement. I never backed down, instead pursuing my dream with the same passion and hard work I apply to everything I do.
Every time the alarms go off and I race to the engine, I carry with me the reminder of what’s possible when we don’t take NO for an answer, instead pushing to redefine what is possible.
Much of what I have witnessed and at times even experienced in my job has informed and led my own work – both as a firefighter and as a member of my community.”
