India’s Avani Lekhara won the gold medal in shooting at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. This is India’s first gold medal in shooting in the history of the Paralympics. When Avani was eleven years old, she suffered a serious spinal injury in a car accident. After that, she became wheelchair bound. However, she never let this get in her way and started focusing on her studies. Her father encouraged her to get involved in a sport, and she initially tried both shooting and archery. She found she enjoyed shooting more and started taking training in shooting in Jaipur in 2015. Avani works as an Assistant Conservator of Forests in Rajasthan. She says, “Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those cards you hold well.”
